The Flipper-Tubman Scale

Passion + Persistence + Principle + Purpose

Darryl L. Mobley – founder of Catapult Leaders – knows that the key to high achievement by Black Americans is not just education, talent, or connections. The key to Black Americans reaching the heights in any field is what he calls, “a delicious gumbo of perseverance, focus, goal orientation, self-worth, context, learning flexibility, and fighting spirit.” All of these attributes were embodied in the indomitable spirit and world-changing accomplishments of Henry O. Flipper (first Black graduate of West Point and first commander of The Buffalo Soldiers) and Harriet Tubman (legendary conductor of the Underground Railroad, first woman to lead American soldiers in combat, and spy).

Darryl developed the Flipper-Tubman Scale using insights received from the kids he met while growing up living inside a juvenile home for Black youth (his father was the superintendent), his work as a fruit picker with migrant workers, his experience as a cadet at West Point, his service as a Military Intelligence Officer in the Army, lessons learned from Grit (by Angela Duckworth) and What Makes the Great Great (by Dennis P. Kimbro), his time as a corporate executive during which he hired, developed, and promoted many college graduates, his study of history’s greatest Black achievers, what he learned interviewing high-achieving Black Americans over the past 30 years, and his experiences as a leading life & executive coach for high-achievers of all skin colors across the U.S. and around the world.

The Flipper-Tubman test is taken as part of the application process for Catapult Leaders.  The Flipper-Tubman Scale results are a look into the mindset of those who seek to reach the top in their professional careers.

“FIRE BURNS. WATER RUNS DOWNHILL. AND PEOPLE TEND TO HIRE PEOPLE WHO LOOK/SOUND/ACT LIKE THEM.”
